How much longer does it take to set up your average drum kit as opposed to wheeling a machine up there and plugging it in??? If it's a visual thing (drums ALSO take up a lotta space on the stage), then just put a fern or something in the space where there'd usually be a drummer. Problem of 'looking cool' solved. lol

Dummers!
First of all, timing is something that can't be ignored! It's gotta be solid!
Some drummers (no detriment to them) hardly ever play fills (AC/DC, Def Leppard etc) and then you get some where the drumming is a lot busier (Slayer, WASP, etc)
Personally I like both approaches but it comes down to whats good for the song.
My boy Mark however works both approaches and very glad to have him! Hits HARD, lots of energy, solid time-keeping ....and does lots of stick twiddling haha
A little leak from the studio but after we finish recording Hallion's next album, I'm working on a side project where I doubt there will be a drum kit. The ryhthm section will be provided by bhorans and the like. Hopefully successfully fusing Celtic music with roaring hard rock...

okay as they said up there, it's ALL about the groove; BUT timing has to come first. You need to be a solid drummer FIRST, because if you're not solid, dead on, and playing stuff where it should be (fills, etc) then whats the point? Personally, I think stick flips are obnoxious as fuck. I CAN twirl my sticks and I do a little, just because it's FUNNY to see the drummer in a punk band playin like it's 1986 (yeah the year I was born, I know, shaddup guys but I think it's played out and just annoying now.
Lycan, as for your drum machine theory...Sorry but a band is a band because of the people in it, not a band without all members.(there are a few exceptions to this rule such as Sigue Sigue Sputnik) Sure you can lay down your demos n stuff with a drum machine and stuff, but are you forgetting what it mocks to begin with? I understand that there are MILLIONS of flake drummers out there, but at the same time, there are MILLIONS of flake guitarist and bassists, or singers, or whatever. That generalization kind of makes me mad, because I know alot of drummers that are like me, and are early to every practice, always ready to rock, NOT bitching about how we do 10 times what anyone else in the band does.
Oh and 9.9 times out of ten, you can tell it's a drum machine and not an actual drummer, which just makes you look like you can't handle working with other people which in turn makes you sound like a joke.(but like I said, as with any rule, there is always exceptions; exceptions proove the rule)

It'z not alwayz a case of not being able to work with people though. Some drummerz are just plain fucking lazy or it can be hard to come by a drummer when you need one
